The demise of Jacob Oulanyah left the position of speaker vacant, so the past three days have seen a scramble for the position with the ruling party NRM fronting Bukedea Women Representative Anita Among who has been deputy speaker of parliament with opposition also fronting Bugiri municipality legislator Asuman Basalirwa.

The race had only two candidates and after elections at Kololo, Anita Among has taken the day to replace her fallen boss with 401 votes and Asuman Basalirwa got 66 votes despite a block vote from the opposition who are over 100 members in parliament.

Anita Among now replaces Jacob Oulanyah as the new speaker of parliament and thanks to the endorsement by the NRM CEC and Caucus which placed her as the favorite candidate to win the vote since her party commands the biggest numbers in parliament.

She will now preside over a sitting of parliament to vote the deputy speaker in the next few minutes after being given the instruments of power to lead parliament.

Details to follow shortly.
