The Electoral Commission has launched nationwide elections for Special Interest Groups (SIGs), starting at the sub-county level with polls for senior citizens aged 60 and above.

According to spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the elections will span a week and take place in all sub-counties, town councils, and divisions across the country. The exercise is part of Uganda’s constitutional framework to ensure inclusive representation for various marginalized groups—namely older persons, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and the youth.

PWD elections are scheduled for July 16, followed by youth polls on July 18. Only individuals already elected at the parish level are eligible to vote in this sub-county phase.

Mucunguzi emphasized that the elections will follow the “lining up” voting method—behind the candidate, their agent, portrait, or symbol—and encouraged all participants to uphold peace and electoral regulations.

He further warned against hate speech, misinformation, and incitement, urging voters and stakeholders to conduct themselves with civility and legality. He reiterated that these elections, grounded in Article One of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution, are meant to strengthen democratic participation and not to incite division.

The outcome of the sub-county elections will later feed into electoral colleges that elect SIG representatives to Parliament.
