Makerere University has launched electronic academic transcripts and certificates in a move expected to simplify access to academic records and improve document verification for graduates, employers and educational institutions.
The digital platform enables graduates to download their academic documents electronically while allowing authorised third parties to confirm their authenticity online once permission has been granted by the graduate.
Speaking to Uganda Radio Network, Academic Registrar Prof. Mukadasi Buyinza described the initiative as a major milestone in the university’s efforts to modernise academic administration.
“The new e-transcripts and certificates will enable graduates to access their academic documents electronically while allowing employers and other third parties to verify their authenticity online with the graduate’s permission,” Buyinza said.
He explained that the system will strengthen the security and integrity of academic records while reducing the delays associated with obtaining certified documents.
Buyinza said the university has also institutionalised blended learning across its programmes and is finalising plans to offer fully online degree courses to expand access for learners beyond Uganda.
He further revealed that revised curricula based on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic year to ensure graduates acquire practical skills required in today’s job market.
During a briefing on the implementation of Makerere University’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said claims that the institution is facing a lecturer shortage are unfounded.
He said the university currently has approximately 32,000 students and 1,400 teaching staff, including about 1,100 lecturers with doctoral qualifications, resulting in a lecturer-to-student ratio of 1:21.
Nawangwe said the university’s strong academic workforce has boosted research output and international competitiveness.
“The university continues to make significant strides in building a robust and motivated workforce through strategic recruitment, appointments and promotions,” he said.
He added that despite retirements and staff attrition, Makerere remains committed to replacing vacant positions and attracting highly qualified personnel to support its strategic objectives.
