News making headlines this morning indicate arts teachers who have been on strike since last month over low pay have finally accepted to get back to class even without a convincing deal with government on what pushed them to lay down their tools.
The end strike update was released by their Uganda National Teacher’s Union (UNATU) General Secretary after he led a team of district representatives to Kololo to meet President Museveni, his wife Janet Museveni who is also the minister of education and public service minister Muruli Mukasa.
In the meeting according to Filbert Baguma, the president (Government) insisted that there’s no money to pay the striking teachers rendering their three weeks protest fruitless. Upon being convinced and given two options of continuing with the strike and close the door to negotiations or suspend the strike and open the door for further negotiations.
The gullible teacher’s leaders opted to end the strike and open the door for negotiations but still without striking a money deal or even a simple promise to have their salaries enhanced anytime soon. This brings the teacher’s strike to an end but in premium tears because it has been as fruitless and a barren cow and every teacher is expected to be back to class.
This is just one of the headaches government is suffering in regard to striking public servants, unless something changes today, local government workers including Chief Administrative Officers (CAO) under their Umbrella Local Government Worker’s Union will also start their sit down strike in few days as lecturers in public universities also finalize plans to withdraw their services from government over poor pay.
