A Kakise passenger bus heading to Kampala from Soroti crashed into a bridge at Opuyo Trading Centre early Sunday, leaving three people with serious injuries.
The bus, registration number UAS 159P, reportedly swerved off the road after its driver attempted to avoid hitting a pedestrian who had dashed into the roadway.
Among those injured was the driver, Alfred Ekongo, who was admitted to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital alongside two other victims.
According to eyewitness Isaac Olinga, the incident unfolded while residents were gathered nearby watching a World Cup football match.
“We were here at night watching a World Cup football game when we saw a group involved in a fight. As the altercation intensified, one of the boys tried to cross the road, only to collide with the Kakise bus,” he said.
Olinga added: “The accident happened in front of many people here. We may not blame the driver; he was trying to avoid hitting a man who was being chased and attempted to cross the road.”
The damaged bus was later towed to Soroti Central Police Station as police launched investigations.
